We visited the Yorktown Victory Center just down the road to wrap up our summer study on the American Revolution. The Disney Princess was quite impressed with how much of the information in the gallery that she already knew from our studies. Daddy is a bit of a history buff too and enjoyed pointing out the unique things that caught his attention. The Hawaiian Princess was interested in picking up sticks and rocks while the Racing Princess spent her time observing bugs (budding entomologist??)
At the Yorktown Victory Center, they have a replica of a Continental Army Encampment. We learned about the kitchen: each tent had it's own fire hole and was responsible for cooking their own meals; the tag-alongs: women and children belonging to a soldier in the unit they were following who must be helpful in some form to receive a food ration; and muskets and other artillery (Uncle D would be proud). In fact during the demonstration of how to load and fire the cannon, the Disney Princess was one of the volunteers and performed the duty of the runner whose job is to run the gun powder up to the person who puts it in the cannon.
