WC stands for Water Closet.
In Germany, you don't go to the John or sit upon a throne, you use the toilet or go to the Water Closet. To locate a bathroom in Germany, you look for a small blue sign with the letters WC in white on it.
But that is just the beginning of the fun...

This is a picture of the toilet in my brother-in-law's half bath---do you see the box with the two buttons above the toilet---that is the flusher. The small button for small flushes (aka #1) and the large button when you need larger flushes (aka #2).
Oh and there really isn't such thing as a public toilet--you wanna use the potty out in public, you gotta pay for it--usually about 50 Euro cents--that's to get into the stall!! We haven't actually experienced that just yet.
