This display of medical artifacts goes back over 100 years.
Patent medicines were popular among people who could not afford or did not trust doctors. Local newspapers advertised pills, potions, and oils that promised to cure a wide range of ailments. Most did nothing, while some were dangerous.
The medical log book pictured is from early March 1913. The columns across the top are labeled: date, number, [patient] name, doctor, number of room, surgical, medical, gyneacology, orthopedic, neurological, obstetrical, births, opthalmology and otology, laryncology, cured, improved, unimproved, died, male, female, pay, part pay, free, private, semi-private, ward, country of birth, religion, date of discharge, number of days, diagnosis.
